The Value of Automation

Make a task happen automatically and you have extra decision-making energy that you can use towards something else. Automation reduces the friction of decision fatigue and frees up your mind to use it towards other things.

Automation, if allowed to happen, creates a snowball effect. James Clear introduced the concept to me in his book Atomic Habits.

Here are some examples of Automation paying off in my own life:

Business: I showed up and regularly plugged away at a way to make my art more promptly available to you. I knew if that was my prioritized task for each day, it would get done one way or another. And guess what I get to share with you?! An online shop coming next week where you can order a variety of products that have four of my most-loved souvenirs of winter and St. Marys, KS.

Fueling my love for nature and the inner artist: My constellation dates (where I make time to practice stargazing and identify the constellations)  is accumulating. When I drove down the highway last night, I didn’t just see dark landscape and a star-studded sky, with a road cutting through the dark landscape. I saw Gemini, the twins, standing above Orion, who was shooting his bow at Taurus, while the dogs below lept at the hero’s heels. Drama quietly encircled the earth while I drove underneath it all (and tried to be attuned to deer crossing the road.)

Meal prep: If I have my lunch and sometimes my dinner made by the end of the weekend, I save extra money. I also eat better and more regularly instead of getting depressed over the effort to construct a meal by myself and thus not eating much at all.

Spiritually: I have a standing confession time. I know what day, when, and where, and what I have to do to be available for it. Thus, thanks be to God, I am always rolling in his graces.

Automation secures your trajectory.

What is a direction you would like to head towards? What little thing can you automate to make it more accessible?
